Book Overview

A key figure in the international avant-garde, Piet Mondrian (1872-1944) was at once an extraordinary painter and leading art theoretician whose influence resonates to this day. Coining the term "Neo-plasticism", he pursued a style of painting composed only of primary colors against a grid of black vertical and horizontal lines and a white base background. Mondrian's vision was that this essential painting would help to achieve a society in which art as such has no place, but rather exists for the total realization of "beauty." With stints in Amsterdam, Paris, London, and New York, Mondrian drew upon the modern metropolis and modern music, especially jazz, as points of inspiration. In 1917, he cofounded De Stijl, originally a publication, and subsequently a circle of practitioners, committed to a strictly geometrical art of horizontals and verticals. With key works and succinct texts, this introductory book presents Mondrian's distinctive and pioneering oeuvre, an abiding inspiration for fashion, art, architecture, and design, from White Stripes album covers to Yves Saint Laurent dresses. 2016 (c) US Mondrian/Holtzman Trust

Met my needs

I purchased this book because I recently moved to a street named "Mondrian Way". I am an amateur decorator and many articles I read would reference a "Mondrian-like" appearance or "reminscent of Mondrian". I was curious about "Mondrian" and this book not only has satisfied my curiousity about the person, but also about his art and the motivation behind it. I would recommend this book to anyone with a similar interest.

A Beautiful Book - An Important Artist

I think I like this book on Mondrian more than any other that I have. The reproductions are all quite good and plentiful. The text is fine, I learned a good deal. However it could have been a bit more insightful when bridging the seemingly different periods of his work. Look at his early paintings and see all that they have in common with everything else he did. Notice his reoccurring primary palette, his interest in outlines, how a turning windmill could perhaps have some connection to his decision to turn a canvas on end, and his love of nature and quest to understand everything as a vertical and horizontal mark. There are very few artists as open and brave as he who let his work truly evolve to such an ideal state.

THIS IS A BOOK TO STUDY !

Reading this is a must for any artist . What can I say but I was told to read this and am so glad I was. Some of the best advise I ever got . TO read the book and what is in it !

Mondrian (GREAT Modern Masters Series)

This would be biography of Mondrian provides quite a bit of insight into the artist himself. A attention keeping book, this one gives insight to one of the great abstract expressionists.
