Read it again, Mom!

Molly and the Giant has been a big success with my five-year-old daughter. She has asked me to read it (jumping up and down on the bed with excitement) every night for storytime over the last three days. (The length of the book is perfect for reading in one night.) The storyline is similar to Jack and the Beanstalk - a poor young child outsmarts a giant and wins riches in the process. In fact, a little googling has suggested that Molly and the Giant is an English fairytale and probably has the same origins as Jack and the Beanstalk, or Jack and the Killer Giant. Molly and the Giant is, sadly, not a story that I was familiar with growing up, as I always heard the Jack and the Beanstalk version. This book is written in an Irish accent. As an Californian, the Irish turns of phrases such as "Troth" and "Och Achnee" do not flow when I'm reading them aloud. I stumbled over it, and never really picked up the cadence of the book. Also, my daughter is capable of reading books like Owl at Home to herself, but because of the Irish voice, Molly and the Giant would be too complicated for her to read by herself. But I'm willing to overlook that because this book has one of the main attributes that I love: a smart, female protagonist that is a good role model for my daughter. Most important, though, is how my daughter responds to the book. She says, "I love Molly! Mom, please, read it again!"
