The poor conditions of sciences in the Greek, Roman and Christian periods of Europe have been described for comparison. Europe was a centre of superstitions and ignorance during the Christian rule (CE 400-1600). This has been called the Dark Age. In Europe, calculations beyond adding and subtracting were not possible up to 1500 CE. Greek mathematics and medicine were banned by Christian rulers of Europe.
