This selection of Hebrew poetry concentrates on the early giants Bialik, Tschernikovsky, and also Shlonsky. It contains many wonderful poems ably translated. It is excellent tool for the student of Hebrew who can learn much from studying original Hebrew and translation. There are now much more comprehensive anthologies of Hebrew poetry but this one remains a very good one.
Great resource

I found this book in the library and bought my own copy because I liked it so much I couldn't give it up. I use it as a resource to help me practice my Hebrew, and it's ideal for that purpose in some ways. The book has Hebrew poems, with vowel pointings, on the right-hand page and parallel English translations on the left-hand page. This makes it easy to check my own translations, and reading beautiful poetry is much more interesting than translating sections of Deuteronomy. *grin*I would also recommend this for anyone interested in poetry in general. The poems chosen for inclusion in this book are really wonderful. I find myself reading them over and over again (both in English and Hebrew). I have some quibbles with the author's translations in places - sometimes I think she adds words unnecessarily (I prefer Hebrew's natural conciseness) to make the poems sound more flowery or "poetic" at the expense of the real sense of the original poem. Overall, however, a great collection and I'd highly recommend it.
