Book Overview

The Fourteenth Edition continues to include all the material required to master the essential issues that arise in both state and federal criminal cases. The book's comprehensive coverage of constitutional, statutory, and ethical rules regulating the criminal process has made it one of the few textbooks that students over the years have opted to keep as a reference for their work as prosecutors, defense attorneys, and judicial clerks. The new edition also continues the custom of incorporating the most thoughtful and provocative commentary available. The authors bring together the latest statistics, relevant legislative trends, and insightful policy and scholarly debates, facilitating critical analysis of the process and its potential reforms. This unique and always up to date framing of the issues has made the book the nation's premier text for teaching criminal procedure year after year.

Very Very In-depth

This isn't just a casebook, it's a damn near encyclopedia on criminal procedure. Odds are if you use this text, your professor was smart enough to cover only specific areas. As for the text itself, the materials are very in-depth, with detailed Note section spaced in between the few principal cases that the book has to offer. Some notes are extremely relevant to the rule being studied, while others are simple musings, criticisms, and/or the author's opinions on the subject material that will not aid in your understanding of the concepts. As the only people who would buy this are most likely law students, all in all, this casebook is the standard and likely will help you understand all the facets of criminal procedure.

Definitely thorough.

You have to give the editors some credit--it only took around 1600+ pages to cover everything you'd ever want to know about criminal procedure. Seriously, though, I feel this casebook does a better job than most. As expected, it puts in the edited text of the seminal cases, but the casebook does the best between the cases. The notes that follow the cases are incredibly comprehensive. Instead of just adding a couple of squib cases, the notes seem to take the reader down the complete path(s) of the law since the case. It's a great resource, but it the level of detail makes straight reading kind of hairy... but hey. Last time I checked, people don't read casebooks for pleasure.
