Here is a selection of papers concerning artists who participated in the period of vast development in artistic theory. Meyer Shapiro's analysis is enlightening and inspiring. His scope of knowledge is also unmmatched. His articles have always brought jaw-dropping insight, whether it be about symbols in romanesque images/reliefs, or van Gogh's doomed mass of impending crows in his last work. Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys art analysis and theory.
