Modern Alchemy: Leg Four, Part 2

Mileposts Three and Four of Leg Four in Modern Alchemy represent a period of psychological "recalibration" where the Ego moves from the abstract "schooling" of the mind into the "jailbreaking" of the concrete psyche.

Milepost 3: The Childhood Return and the Crude Construct

The third milepost centers on the theme of "becoming as a child" to break free from the matrix-like conditioning of the external world. The Ego finds himself back in a "school" environment, reading stories to children and observing characters like Jay Miller behaving as a child-signifying a new iteration of the process of individuation that requires the suspension of rational disbelief.

A key struggle occurs during an encounter with the "nuisance Anima" (Juliana) on a muddy hill. As she falls, she grabs a tall, thin lamppost-a symbol of the Ego's light-and bends it, illustrating how erratic, unintegrated Anima energy can distort the Ego's expression of truth. This period is marked by the Ego's self-reflection on the work of Modern Alchemy itself; he views his progress as a building rendered crudely, like in "Minecraft," suggesting that while his efforts are functional and provide a parenthetical energy center within the larger simulation, they are still a "work in progress" compared to the Self's architecture.

Milepost 4: The New Lens and the Primal Fire

Milepost Four marks a transition into new intuitive perception and the repair of the concrete side of the psyche. The stage begins with a visionary session where the "Vessel" (Sarah) sees a turquoise starfish and a round sand dollar on a white-sand ocean bed, which the author interprets as the "round fish" of the alchemists-a symbol of the Lapis or the unified Self.

The Ego's ability to perceive the unconscious is significantly upgraded when a helpful Shadow figure (Chedric Jordan) hands him a thick, opaque contact lens (white on the inside, blue on the outside). By placing this lens in his left eye, the Ego gains a robust, intuitive depth of vision that allows him to perceive sudden changes in the unconscious without the interference of his rational-based sight.

The narrative then descends into the "power plant" of the concrete psyche, characterized by three dingy, unkempt generators. Here, the Ego realizes that he has repressed old "alarms" (internal signals) that are now being reactivated by a young mechanic Shadow part. The milepost reaches a climax as the Ego confronts the "All-Consuming Fire," a primal force associated with the "I AM." The Ego is warned that he risks being "burnt to his bones" by this fire if he fails to find a proper channel for his creative flow within the concrete reality of his life, rather than merely projecting it into the "snow piles" of the collective unconscious.

Ultimately, these mileposts demand that the Ego move beyond the "dogmatic way of abstract identification" and embrace the "journey into the concrete," leaving behind old masculine figures who fear this transition.
