A Highly Recommended Text

I have taught a course based on this text for several years. As is par for the course, some students like it, others do not. I have always found it useful. But it was not until I received copies of other texts from publishers trying to sell their wares that I realized how good this text is. Unlike the other texts that provide all sorts of unconnected prescriptions for dealing with this behaviour and that, Martin, Sugarman, & McNamara explain the theory behind these principles and organize chapter by tying techniques to the desired ends. As such, students are challenged to think deeper about the reasons they want students to behave in certain ways and why they may not. One thing that I would like to see in future editions is some attention to the history of classroom managment and discipline. I think that would encourage students to think even deeper about how views change and how current conceptions will also pass. Overall - a highly recommended text.
