Modelling British Railways: Railfreight Sub-Sectors

The mid-1980s saw British Rail carry out a restructuring of its Railfreight business, this culminating in October 1987 with the launch of a bold new image and six sub-sectors based around different commodities, each having a distinctive emblem to identify its locomotives. Coupled with investment in rolling stock and infrastructure, it transformed the look of freight trains across the country and became BR's best ever livery.
