On a camping trip to the Great Smoky Mountains, Sharon sets off with her new bird guide in hand to show her father that she can overcome her fear of nature. Fleeing from a bear, she becomes lost in the wilderness. Injured and afraid, she is rescued by the Bird Clan of the Little People of Cherokee folklore, and taken to their home under Thunder Mountain. To get back to her family, she must embark on a quest to face the many perils of the Cherokee underworld. She must find and kill the great horned serpent Utkena in order to retrieve the crystal embedded in its head, a crystal that will ensure the survival of the Little People. Along the way, she encounters other legendary creatures, like water cannibals, the deadly Spear-finger, and the Lost Boys. Will she find within herself the courage to face the deep woods and the dreaded serpent Utkena?
