Mixed Signals Are Not Mixed

Mixed signals are not mixed. They are the answer.

Every piece of dating advice ever written rests on one assumption, and it is so consistent that nobody states it out loud: that his behaviour is a code.

That the delay means something. That the wording means something. That the pattern of contact is a message in a language you have not yet learned - and that with better decoding you will read it correctly.

An entire industry rests on that premise. Videos on what a three-hour delay signifies. Frameworks with names. Charts.

And an enormous amount of unpaid labour, performed at eleven at night, on material that does not repay analysis.

THE ARGUMENT

Inconsistency is not ambiguity. It is information, it is legible without any special training, and everything you have been calling a mixed signal is you declining to read it.

A person who is inconsistent with you is telling you where you sit on their list. Not that they dislike you. Not that they are damaged, avoidant, frightened of intimacy, or testing you.

That reading is resisted for one reason: it is the only explanation that gives you nothing to do.

TRY THIS TONIGHT

Describe your situation to somebody who has never met him. Facts only, no adjectives, nothing about intentions.

"Three months. He has proposed two plans, one happened, he replies within a day about half the time, and he has said he isn't sure what he wants."

Watch their face. They will not find it ambiguous. They will not ask a single clarifying question.

The ambiguity is not in the situation. It is in the position you are standing in - the only position from which it is unclear.

WHAT IS INSIDE

- THE ECONOMICS. Why a book saying "he is not that interested and there is nothing to work out" cannot generate a sequel, and a book saying "here is the framework" generates a course, a membership and a returning audience.

- THE FOUR THINGS CALLED AMBIGUOUS - and why only one of them genuinely is.

- THE THREE COUNTED BEHAVIOURS. Does he initiate? Does he propose plans with a date? Does he fit you into his life? Half an hour of counting beats six months of analysis.

- THE ONE-SECOND QUESTION, and why everything after the first second is editing.

- THE EXPLANATIONS - he is bad at texting, he has been hurt, he is not ready yet - and the two questions that cut through each without ever disputing it.

- ATTACHMENT THEORY, USED BADLY: how a real body of research became a vocabulary for converting a woman's accurate perception into evidence about her own psychology.

- THE NINETY SECONDS. How to ask without building a case, and how to read all four answers - including the vague one, which is not a third option.

Plus: the man who is technically single. "I love you" and nothing else. When you work together. What his friends know. A vocabulary of the phrases that sound like positions and are not. And three worked cases - one of which turns out to be genuinely ambiguous, because a book that gave the same answer three times would not be worth much.

WHAT THIS IS NOT

Cynical. A cynical book would say all men are the same and nothing works. This one says most situations are legible, that asking usually goes well, and that a good proportion of the answers are yes.

It also says plainly, in its own chapter, when the situation needs a domestic abuse service or a therapist rather than any dating book.

You are not bad at reading people. You read this one accurately in about month three - and then spent a great deal of time and money learning to distrust it.
