Someone gave me a copy of this book, and I'm glad they did. The author has done a remarkable amount of homework to create an engrossing tale base on very factual historical events. Even though I am not a history buff AT ALL, I found it compelling to continue to read the story, and in the process, learned a lot about the history of the mountains in my home state (North Carolina). He does a great job of developing his characters in such a way that each character has their own unique personality and quirks, but you aren't weighted down with too much detail. Add to that the fact that the book is a 'clean-cut' book-one that anyone can read without offense, and you have an unusually enjoyable book to read. I highly recommend it to people of all ages.
