He is an American politician and retired attorney who has served as the senior United States Senator from Kentucky since 1985. With seven terms under his belt, McConnell holds the distinction of being the longest-serving senator in Kentucky history. His tenure as the leader of the Senate Republican Conference from 2007 to 2025 includes two stints as minority leader (2007-2015 and 2021-2025) and a term as majority leader (2015-2021), making him the longest-serving Senate party leader in U.S. history.
