Long before the British ruled Ireland, firecely proud clans controlled the Emerald Isle. Bold chieftains, valiant warriors, mighty magicians, and indomitable women, they inhabited a land rich with... This description may be from another edition of this product.
I have had this novel for 17 years. Never have I let it go. That should say something for this book. After reading a couple of the reviews, I will agree that there are a couple of scenes that are slightly unbeleivable. Even saying that, the character of Arrah is so strong. She has to be the strongest female character I have ever read. She has more faults than most of the current heroines, which I personally like. Being a writer myself, I do see errors in this novel, but I think it is her 'voice' that gives it so much life. Even though Seaghan, the hero, is portrayed as very strong and masculine, Arrah is the stronger of the two, without making him appear wimpy. Very rare. I found this book at a time in my life when I needed to be stronger than anyone around me, and it gave me that strength. A good book can do that.

The prologue starts off with the switching of babies between a noble woman and a servant. Although it is cliche, I found it a very interesting beginning that caught my attention and interest. From there, we are introduced to Arrah O'Donnell who strives to not let her gender be in the way of her passion: to be completely independent. When there is an arranged marriage planned for her, the beautiful Arrah hides on board on one of her father's ships. There, she discovers her love for the sea and sailing. Along her adventures, she meets people who she cares for, people who become her enemies, and people who are jealous of her courage and independence. There are two men who learn to love her for her mesmerizing characteristcs: passionate, powerful Seaghan and gentle, heroic Carbri. A subplot in the book is of Debrogail, a servant and childhood friend of Arrah. Although she and Bres are madly in love, complications such as lies, jealousy, and threats prevent them from coming together. With that said, I gave it 4 stars because there are some parts in the book that are completely absurd and totally unbelievable. I won't say what these parts are but when you read it, you'll understand. Also, the way that people are killed is quite repetitive (gutted). Another thing that sort of annoyed me was how on every other page, it was mentioned how beautiful and enchanting Arrah was. I tried to like the protagonist, Arrah, but for someone who was supposed to be the incarnate of womanly intelligence and courage, she sure acted ignorant sometimes. For example, she miscarried her first child because she was in battle. She miscarried her SECOND child because she was in battle. Her third child almost died because she just HAD to go to Portugal with her crew (despite the fact that her husband offered to take her sailing whenever she wanted). In spite of these problems, it was still an okay read. I'd give it 3.7/5 The plot had a lot of potential...
I loved it!

This is a wonderful historical fiction! I guess you would call it a fantasy- but it does seem to cross generes. This is packed with action, intrigue and (a little) romance! I can NOT get enough of this author. I've read this book, like 14 times already! It rocks!!!

I knew this book was a romance, so the sex was expected, and rather well written. The story and strength of the main character compelled me to virtually fly through this book. I cried with her pain, and I shared in her joys and triumphs. I truely felt the fire for life that drives the Celtic people in her writting. I have reread this book many times and I still love it.
