Reviewer: Eliza Boncoeur (Concord, Massachusetts) - See all my reviews This is a book all young women should read - and reflect upon. Since I like journeys to anywhere -but especially into the radical questions about family, growing up female, what is a father, what is my place in this crazy creation, and what is it that binds us to the past, I really could chew on this book. I could chew and still feel the mystery which eludes language at the heart of its at once mythic and sensual imagery. The author writes with care and a kind of visionary ease-as if this is her home and her family with all the contraditions that entails. She let's the language feel its way into her heroine's heart-the darkness that has kept her bound up and secretive and only half alive. For anyone who has ever felt a disconnect with herself or with her past, this is a necessary book. I also lilke this book because it suits my love of the south since it takes place there, in that backwater country which is it's own world. what is it about? The heroine chooses to make a journey with her once chronically abusive father. I say no more; except this - READTHIS BOOK!

If you have ever been a young child starting out in a Catholic Church, you understand Owl's trepidation. All the mystery of the Church can be overwhelming to a child. As Ellie grew she was estranged from her father for reasons that will be discovered in the book. She doesn't relate to her Mom either so when Tiny, her father, shows up on her doorstep and wants her to go on a trip, she decided to go. During this trip she meets many of the colorful characters that Ms Rand has sprinkled in thruout the book. You could only find them in the deep south, I would think. I felt like I was taking the trip with Ellie and Tiny. Ms Rand makes you part of the story by allowing you to fit yourself into the sideline to watch and worry if the trip needs to hurry just a bit faster to outrun the Sheriff. Will Ellie be able to understand her fathers abandonment when she was a small child. Will she find the answers when she visits her sister Rose's grave. I am left to wonder what happens to Tiny after the book is finished. Like so many good books, you want another chapter, or maybe two more, just to see what happens next. I look forward to reading Ms Rands next book, which I understand is in the works now. Keep writing Ms Rand!

Flying with Ellie Moon

Mississippi Flyway is a powerful work from first-time novelist Nel Rand. It begins with young Ellie Moon running to Mass, afraid to be sent to Hell for another of her many infractions. Her Catholic Church serves pastries and issues rules, but for Ellie's corrosive internal pain, it has nothing to offer. Ellie must find her way to wholeness herself. In her case, that means in the company of her father, the gigantic Tiny Moon, who has previously deserted the family after inflicting the psychic pain Ellie carries with her, affecting everything she does. Like the innocent Huck Finn who rafts down the same river, learning as he goes, Ellie makes her own journey, meeting an assortment of characters-gamblers, con men, hustlers, a voodoo queen, and the unforgettable psychopathic sheriff who follows them, driven by a pathological need to revenge himself on Tiny when he finds him. As we follow the journey and the river to New Orleans, we are kept in suspense. Will the sheriff exact his revenge before Ellie can find the strength and wisdom to assuage her pain? The river carries many secrets and will divulge them only to those who are deserving. Readers who make and complete this journey with Ellie will find themselves similarly rewarded
