In 1812, new priest Father Valentino is assigned to Mission Santa Cruz in the viceroy of Alta California. The mission system is touted as an outreach to save souls and teach modern methods to the native people. After arriving, he finds the mission system has a secret objective: to stop the demonically possessed running rampant in Alta California. He meets an enigmatic exorcist priest who has a set of shackles blessed and enhanced to restrain the possessed.
Swift Sparrow is the daughter of the medicine man of the Achegowi tribe. Being female, she can never follow in her father's footsteps, though it seems she shares his psychic gifts. In addition, she was born with a club foot, and that disability leads many in the tribe to believe she was cursed from birth.
Demonically-possessed Black Raven rises to lead a band of savage Thantakowi warriors against the Spanish and the native tribes of Alta California. Father Valentino and Swift Sparrow must combine their knowledge and the skills of their two cultures to stop the killing.
