In the early 1800s, seventeen-year-old Hannah Whittier is traveling by ship down the coast from her Quaker home in Massachusetts to her brother's house in Charleston, South Carolina. To while away the dull hours, Hannah composes a list of qualities she wants in a husband. Boredom will soon be the least of her worries. First the Molly Claridge is boarded by the British frigate, H.M.S. Dissuade, and forced to turn over any supposed Englishmen. Later the American vessel is blown out of the water by a French man o'war. After a long, harrowing day clinging to a grate and battered by the sun, Hannah is fished out of the water by the Dissuade and forced to sail toward England with the British crew and its imperious yet devilishly handsome captain, Sir Daniel Spark. Proper young Quakeress Hannah locks horns with salty Captain Spark, who expects her to carry her weight by helping their cook and keeping watch. The captain has none of the qualities on Hannah's list, so why is she so drawn to him? Could it be that loyalty and valor are more important than mild manners and patience? Hannah learns that Captain Spark has fought valiantly in England's naval battles against France, and she sympathizes with his weariness in the face of so much death and destruction. Captain Spark in turn values Hannah's lively spirit and positive attitude. And, despite her tanned skin and cabin boy attire, Hannah presents quite a temptation to the captain who has been too long at sea. Now, if only they can make it to England in one piece ...
The plot and characters were interesting and convincing. Ms Kelly’s historical backdrops are always more than background and this is the case here also. She does not hold back on the savagery of war at sea, making some passages quite daunting.
Her ‘hero’ is interesting - sometimes adorable, other times he needs smacking! And the heroine is almost always adorable, except for her speech:)
Loved it, Aunt Carla!

With three children keeping me very busy, and a husband pursuing education and a career, I rarely have time to sit and read a good book. I finally was able to read Miss Whittier Makes a List, and thoroughly enjoyed it! Regretfully, this is the first book of Carla's that I have read. I have known through my life that she was a novelist. I am so glad I picked that book out of my shelf and read it! I am now on a search for as many as I can get!
Bliss.

I think this is one of Carla Kelly's better books. I don't think she knows how to write a bad book. I've no talent for writing these things. That said it's a sweet, believable, wonderful story with plenty of romance. On my keeper shelf it goes.
wonderful read

I sat up until midnight reading this book because I had to know how the author would solve the problem of keeping these two together. I found the book very refreshing. It took a trite plot element - woman on board a sea vessel - and treated it realistically and effectively. I also like the Quaker angle. The ending was very satisfying.
FANTASTIC PLOT, FANTASTIC WRITING, I FELL IN LOVE

I read this book a couple of years ago, and it was so good, the writing so great, the characters so true, funny, and original, the plot so fantastic, I read it in one sitting, and began looking for more books by Carla Kelly. Am still looking. don't pass this book up.
Excellent!

Carla Kelly has quickly become one of my favorite writers of Regency romance, and this books is an excellent example why. The characters are vividly drawn and the plot is not your standard Lord meets Lady. An absolutely delightful read.
