Miriam Her husband wanted her to go to his parents in England to save her from the rabble who would attack the plantation. His parents hated Jews with a passion. Notified he was Killed in action, she took the first ship back. The ship owners quadrupled the insurance. Assisted a doctor to board, who was returning to serve in the Southern cause. Half the crew and most of the passengers were poisoned. Death got its day. Having graduated from Heidelberg's medical school, Miriam takes over his orders, medical kit and trunk, she becomes Major Michael Shepard. Arriving in Barbados, gets free passage to the coast in exchanged for removing a carbuncle. Shelled by a Yankee frigate, ends up close to road to Tebeauville, Georgia. Finds plantation in bad state. Fires overseer and gets suggestion to make the home into a hospital. Gets orders to got to Richmond Confederate headquarters, further orders take her to Corinth. A girl's school taken over by the rebels, becomes a hospital. The battle lost, she is left behind with the wounded, discharged by the Yankees, she heads home. On the way falls in love with a Yankee spy, Jake Fellows. The Plantation taken over by a gang of thugs, a battle ensues and is won. The effort to build a hospital continues. Again, called to Richmond, is sent to Vicksburg. This time on the front lines. Operating under extreme danger, the confederates, again, lose the battle and leave the wounded and the medical units behind. Again, back to the plantation. Taking in Yankee as well as Confederate soldiers, Jake Fellows goes to New York, Brings Miriam's father and Rabbi to plantation. 'making an honest woman out of her.' The hospital becomes the haven, as both sides send their most grievous wounded there. Finally, the war comes to an end. The Yankees begin taking over the Confederate land. To save it, she, Mrs. Marian Fellows, MD. deeds the plantation to Jake Fellows. They then look to the job of increasing the population which both enjoy to the fullest.
