Fred Acqistapace's book, MIRACLES THAT NEVER WERE: Natural Explanations of the Bible's Supernatural Stories, is a work of clear and unfettered intelligence. It is a work in straightforward language, intended for the average reader. As he states in Chapter 1, "I am not interested in presenting technical or deep theological concepts. I intended to keep it plain, simple, and easy to read." It is a work for everyone, especially those who desire a deeper understanding of the Bible, its origins, and purposes. Acqistapace's thinks on a different level, he looks beyond the superficial to the core. He demonstrates that the miracle stories recorded in the Bible are the results of either the ancient peoples inability to understand the natural explanations to the events they witnessed, or that the writers of the books of the Bible were creating miracle stories as surface dressings to something deeper. It is unfortunate that people view the supernatural story out of its intended context, and fail to see beyond it to the deeper message embedded within. He gives Jesus back his humanity, which the Churches have denied from almost the beginning. I finally must concur with Acquistapace, who wrote in his Epilogue: "Jesus as man is much more convincing and compelling than Jesus as God." Those who can read this book with an open mind and heart will understand why. PM
