Lara is fourteen, but is she ready for war! Torn from her happy home and exiled to a remote village, Lara's long ordeal begins. Police interrogations, family and friends deported to Siberia, futility with underground organizations, dwindling hope--will Lara survive the awful struggles of wartime Europe!
I read this book because it was recommended to me because of my interest in Poland. Its a good Young Adult book but there was one thing that didnt fit in with the whole setting of being in 1939 Stalnist ruled Poland and as soon as you read it you are automatically thrown back into reality after you had already been submerged into the books surroundings. One thing that i did not like about the book was her random chapters thrown in with facts it would have worked if she was to seperate them through out the story to make it flow more. Over all the book was well written and you can believe that it happened though in some spots it seemed to be like a fiction novel instead of Non-fiction.
History made Real!

Wow, this is a great read not only for young adults but all ages! I felt that I was transported back in time into the mind of Lara, the 14 year old title character. This is a little talked/written about part of World War II. Everyone knows about Nazi Germany and the attrocities that were done by them. However, what about what Stalin and the communist police did in other parts of the world! It made me and my teenage children realize how blessed we are to live in a free world! I think this would be a great book to read in the junior and senior high schools.
