When six-year-old Minnie is torn from her family and sent into hiding in a cramped attic above a stranger's home in Nazi-occupied France, her previously joyful and vibrant world shrinks suddenly to a roof space and a skylight.
Her loving family gone, replaced by the stern Madame Fragonard and her 'man-child' brother, 'Uncle' Pierre, Minnie keeps her old life alive through drawing. She draws anything and everything she can remember from the time before the world turned dark: Maman, Papa, Hannah, Natan, Babushka the cat, her friends, her teacher... each stroke of her pencil is an act of defiance, each drawing a fragment of her soul preserved against the darkness.
As weeks turn to months, and the war rages outside, Minnie's art tells the story she cannot speak. A story of resilience, longing and the quiet bravery of a girl who refuses to give up hope.
