Minirhizotron Observation Tubes: Methods and Applications for Measuring Rhizosphere Dynamics

The minirhizotron root observation tube systems have the potential to substantially decrease the cost of studying root system dynamics while increasing the ease with which meaningful studies can be conducted. An organizing committee coordinated a symposium on minirhizotron observation systems for the 1986 annual meeting of the American Society of Agronomy. The committee included the following individuals: J.E. Box, Jr., chair, and W.L. Bland, D.A. Brown, D.C. Coleman, A.J.M. Smucker, R. Snider, and D.R. Upchurch, members. The symposium was sponsored by Divisions S-6, S-1, C-2, C-3, and C-5. This publication, Minirhizotron Observation Tubes: Methods and Applications for Measuring Rhizosphere Dynamics, is the written version of most of the papers presented at that symposium. Some authors presented papers on rhizosphere dynamics using techniques other than minirhizotrons; most of these papers are not included in this publication. One paper, by J. Vos and J. Groenwald, was not presented but is included here because of its relevance and utility.
