Mindsets of Sensual Loneliness is a twelve-minute long piece for the extremely virtuosic but moody double bass player. Its three movements go through a roller coaster of techniques, timbres, and emotions. The first movement, "Indifference", may be slightly deceiving in its seemingly laid back character. It is played entirely in pizzicato and builds up tension through small bursts of fast, energetic passages, which set up developments in the rest of the piece. The second movement, "Delusional", starts to reveal the emotional instability of the piece, featuring stark timbral and textural contrasts. The third movement, "Desperate", as its title suggests, is a frantic, jittery movement that includes extremely fast passages, unusual playing techniques, "memories" from the first movement, and angry stomping on the floor. Mindsets of Sensual Loneliness received an inspiring premiere only four days after its completion in February 2007 by three stellar bass players - Marie-Claude Tardif, Evan Halloin, and Kevin Jablonski - who played one movement each on that occasion.
