Mile High Salute

This was a fantastic read about a real rags to riches story. A quote from the front cover refers to Lyle Alzado as a "real life Rocky" which is what you get from this book. You also get a good glimpse in to history chronicling a special time period in Denver. I admire Lyle Alzado as a man who had focus and knew where he wanted to go, how to get there and achieved that goal with solid hard work. He wasn't a natural football player but his hardwork and dedication made him one of the best. Yes, the steroids definitely played their part, and no they are not mentioned in the book, but then you can take all the roids in the world and they won't do a thing for you without the drive to accomplish something and that accomplishment despite all the negativity Lyle had to deal with is what you read about here. I give it 5 stars not because of it's brilliant writing, as the writing is only mediocre, but because the story is so well put together and inspiring. I would recommend this book to football fans, Lyle Alzado fans and people who like to read about Denver in the 70s.

Broncos to Raiders and everything in between.

I was there in 1977 when the Denver Broncos made it to the Super bowl. I was a fan then and a fan now. However, this book showed the true man behind the image and honestly, his posing. Lyle had a big heart and I respected that. I met him as a child and he gave me this advice; "hurt them before they hurt you." His life was cut short and ended tragically. This book was awesome! I own it and will keep it around for a 2nd and 3rd reading. Its well worth the buy even if you are reading a worn out, tattered copy...
