Mifepristone, also known as RU-486, is a synthetic steroid compound that has become a cornerstone of medical abortion due to its ability to induce abortion in early stages of pregnancy. Developed in the 1980s, mifepristone has been used in medical abortion since the 1990s and is now prescribed in many countries in Europe, North and South America, and Asia. The history of mifepristone dates back to the early 1980s, when scientists at the French pharmaceutical company Roussel Uclaf began researching a synthetic steroid compound that would induce abortion in early stages of pregnancy. After several years of research, the compound, which was later named mifepristone, was found to be effective in inducing abortion in animals. In 1988, the French government granted approval for clinical trials of mifepristone and it was approved for medical use in France in 1989.
