I shared Cheryl Harness and Robin Brickman on Halloween

This past Halloween I had the pleasure to share Midnight in the Cemetery with two boys who are critically ill. One was in the hospital on Halloween having undergone a bone marrow transplant and the other is being tutored at home having survived having his liver shut down this past summer. Both these children have faced death in the most real sense and both of them loved the illustrations in the book. Further more they were absolutely fascinated with the process Robin Brickman uses to compose the artwork for the illustrations. I think we sometimes have to take a chance and have very frank discussions with children. We don't need to dwell on death and dying. Children are naturally drawn to the details in this book. The illustrations are a way to be drawn into the thought processes of children with whom we share the book. I know as an educator that children are fascinated by things we may not be. Seeing a good book through the eye and mind of a child is a very powerful way to view a book. My viewing of Midnight in the Cemetery on Halloween with these two boys is something I will remember for years and years to come. It is a must have for those who adore Halloween and are looking for additions to their library of children's books.
