A modern side to Rome

Millions of tourists visit Rome every year and go home feeling they have experienced this rich and historical society. They have... but only as a tourist. Michael Gyulai lived, worked and communed in the Eternal City on a daily basis as one of its citizens. Up until now I have always envision Rome as being strictly a historical place but reading "Midnight In Rome" made me realize there is a modern side to Rome as well. Gyulai fluently paints a detailed picture of modern Roman society and culture with its industries, nightclubs and people. By including Italian phrases with delayed translations, Gyulai gets across the frustration of living in a town where your comprehension of the language is minimal. "Midnight In Rome" is also for the adventurer or the adventurer at heart. It is the adventure we all look forward to when we get out of school or as we look back on our youth, the adventure we wish we would have taken.

Real Life Adventure

I went to UCLA and also went abroad, as Mike did in the book. The book kept me on my toes and still had me in a state of playful nighttime wonder when all I had expected was a redundant journal about travels. What I got was a very real story about the quarter life crisis and the need to challenge one's self in a non-academic way. I can't wait to read more by this author and have reccomended it to all my friends.

Very engaging read

I couldn't put this book down, which is not a common occurrence for me. I felt like I could actually hear the dialogue between the main character and his Italian friends who were trying to learn English, and I laughed out loud at a few points.

A great read

After I started reading Midnight in Rome, I had trouble putting it down. It was fascinating to read about one young man's experieces as he immerses himself in the culture of Rome. He brings the city alive in an intimate light as he finds employment, friends and adventures among the famous sights of the city. I've recommended this book to friends because I think the author has a good voice and narrative style and an interesting tale to tell.

Highly Recommend!

The author documents his time in Rome in a fashion that creates a remarkable degree of suspense. The book offers a chance to see a part of Rome not present in any guidebook and a chance to relive - or experience anew - the nightlife of youth. The author is introspective, thoughtful, and humorous. I highly recommend it!
