This book is based on anthropological research into middle childhood among the Akamba people of rural Makueni County in Kenya. Middle childhood is the period that falls approximately between the ages of six and twelve years. Among primates, it is a uniquely human life stage with clearly defined physiological markers.
Among the Akamba people of Kenya, middle childhood is well delineated based on societal roles and cultural expectations. These children are old enough to have chores and household tasks assigned to them yet not old enough for secondary school which is the age most children leave home for boarding school. In many ways, children in this age group are important contributors in the family.
This book explores the ecology of health during middle childhood in the context of the Akamba culture with the aid of anthropometric data and through the lens of life history.
