After countless books and in-house training classes on Microwoft software (which included handbooks), I've finally found an Excel Book that was not only written by someone with in-depth knowledge/skills, but is able to communicate in a clear, well organized and easy-to-follow manner. This book painlessly took me from a Beginner/Intermediate to an Intermediate/Advanced in a relatively short time. I'm looking forward to more from Ms. Johnson on Access and Word!
Excel ent

I've taken a loooong time over this review. Mainly because I didn't believe a book about Excel could be so good! It would be easy to go on and on but I'm desperately trying to keep it short!!... Soooo... here goes! This book could easilly be renamed ... "How to... in Excel". I mean it. It's absolutely full of tips hints and suggestions for stuff you didn't think you could do... but can!! The "real world scenarios" are a great touch. I thought I was pretty well versed in Excel. Reading this book... I'm not saying I was wrong... I just learnt so much more!!! But..It's an MOS book.. and in that context it walks through all of the items needed to become certified. Actually it strolls.. with an easy gait. I tried this on my non cumputer litrate mum and actually bought her the book becuase I wouldn't have got it back otherwise!! Likewise my brother.. who uses Excel in his work daily.. just had to have a copy of his own... another birthday present solved! As an MOS book... everything is there. *All* the stuff you need to get qualified with examples downloadable from the Wiley site. My copy is a christmas tree of coloured sticky tags to go back to. The explanations are step by step and have clearly been worked on till they are on the money. I know. Because I didn't want my mum to come back at me and say "but it said.."... I took a lot of time working through them all... each and every instruction for every example.. and all worked as stated for me, which is in itself unusual! You may have gathered by now that this is not just an MOS book. It's a book for anyone who wants to do something with Excel... and it's got pictures!! Linda has done a remarkable nee miraculous job of producing a book that is readable as well as useable by both novices and experts. If you get this book you will definately not be dissapointed. Linda... if you ever do an access or word book please give me a heads up so I can order in advance of the rush!!! Lisa
More than an MOS guide

Although the book is a study guide for MOS, you don't have to be taking that exam(s) to benefit from this book. If you are intimidated by spreadsheets, and want to get started with a text book equivalent of your school books, this book fits the requirement. And of course, if you are a candidate for a MOS exam, then you'll love the book. I liked how it is laid out -- the exercises are "real life" and the scenarios are thoughful and well explained.
A thorough education in Excel

As a self-taught Excel user, my education in Excel is holey at best. The Excel tutorial books I have bought in the past have been mostly useful for "spot" problem-solving, but did not address the bigger conceptual questions. Ms. Johnson's book successfully balances the nitty-gritty how-to with clear explanations of the bigger concepts. (I finally understand Pivot Tables, for instance.) The book is beautifully organized and clearly written. Although I wasn't planning to take the MOS exam, the material has been laid out so logically that it moves the reader along step by step to a surprisingly high level of expertise in a short period of time.
Linda Knows Her Stuff!

I am never going to take the MOS exams, so why do I need this book? Because I use Excel daily for any number of tasks and this book has shown me ways to do things I didn't realize were there. I have always known Excel is one powerful program, but Linda's book has made me realize it is a lot more powerful than I thought. There are no hard to follow scenarios, everything is so easy to understand the way Linda presents the material. I have taken several classroom classes for Excel and this book beats the classroom experience for me, hands down. I keep it handy as I never know what I will want to try next. I am learning more about Excel than I ever thought possible, as I used to think I already knew it all. Linda has shown me new ways to do tasks that just make them fun instead of tedious.
