M gmaq Heritage Notes was a regular column in the Tribune, a Campbellton, NB, newspaper from October 2000 to August 2001, by the late Emmanuel N g gwes Metallic (1946-2008), a renowned M gmaq linguist and historian from Listuguj First Nation. Across the Restigouche River from Campbellton, Listuguj sits within the M gmaq District of Gesp g (also known as Gesp gew gi) that covers the area extending from the Miramichi to the Southern St. Lawrence to present day Quebec City.
This collection contains the nearly 40 columns Metallic wrote for the Tribune. They cover a wide range of topics relating to M gmaq culture, from stories and legends, teachings on M gmaq place names, language, and spirituality, profiles of prominent M gmaq people and events, and even a recipe for lusknign (bannock). The insights and teachings on M gmaq spirituality are an especially important contribution of this collection since there are few publications on M gmaq spirituality by M gmaq authors. Metallic's sense of humour, his love of the M gmaq language and M gmaq people, as well as incisive critiques (mostly of the Catholic church) are woven into his writing. This collection will be a wonderful resource for use in M gmaq Studies, M gmaq Language courses, M gmaq law courses, and more.
