What a Book on Painting Should Be

This is by far the best book on an artist's work that I have ever read. It contrasts the tonalist approach (thin layers of paint over a red-brown tonal underlayer) with Monet's Impressionist approach ("The painting is built ...from tiny blocks, spots and touches of paint. It is literally encrusted with paint, glowing like a fabulous, jeweled plaque of gold: garnets, turquoises and sapphires, with bright emerald green here and there; crimson, orange and gold; pale blue and deep ultramarine, vivid greens." Referring to Gare St. Lazare at the Musee d'Orsay.) Although it gives historical context, the discussion of paintings from throughout Monet's career dominates. This book is worlds better than the usual ultra academic tomes that typically come in catalogs of exhibitions. It helps a painter understand another's work without the (for me) mind-numbing step-by-step demos included in most how to paint books.
