Metaphors We Live By: Book XVII: Masculinity, Strength, & Restraint

By tele

Strength is not what it presents itself as.
What presents itself as strength is often the management of the appearance of strength. The actual load is carried somewhere else, by someone else, or not at all.
The performance of strength and the possession of it are not the same condition and are rarely distinguished from the outside.

Metaphors We Live By: Masculinity, Strength, & Restraint is a collection of forty essays examining what strength actually requires, what restraint produces and conceals, and what masculinity as a set of demands does to the people organized around it.

Inside, you will explore:
- Why the performance of strength and the possession of it produce different results under pressure
- How restraint functions as both discipline and suppression, often simultaneously
- What the demand for invulnerability costs the person who meets it successfully
- Why the stoic posture that looks like strength from outside looks different from inside
- How the definition of strength that cannot include asking for help produces a specific kind of isolation
- What is available to the person who stops performing and starts inhabiting

This is not an argument about gender.
This is not a case for any particular version of masculinity.
It is a series of observations about the structure of strength as a demand. What it produces, what it prevents, and what becomes possible when the performance is no longer the priority.
For those who have carried something they were not supposed to put down.
Or who want to understand what strength actually costs the person who has it.
