This tale opens in the offices of The New York Times on August 1, 2022 where an ambitious reporter, Carrie Flanagan, is sweating through her morning due to an air conditioning fiasco. She complains to her editor, but he is unsympathetic despite his affection for his prot?g?. Carrie returns to her computer and is wallowing in self-pity when it happens. A strange message pops up on her screen, a message supposedly from God. Carrie is both a proud lesbian and an even prouder atheist, so she dismisses the words as a hoax, but her curiosity is roused by the message that claims the sender created the human race and is disappointed, telling mankind to do better. She soon realizes she is not the only reporter receiving messages and that it is actually a global phenomenon. God's predictions soon come true as purple snow covers New York despite the August heat while London digs out of a burgundy fluff and Dublin is coated with an emerald frosting. New messages warn politicians to stop lying to the public and bigots are threatened with God's retribution. The world turns upside-down as Carrie continues to follow the story of the century.
