Mersey Island is set in a small coastal town in Massachusetts. The story is told in a series of flash backs between 1973 and 1993. The central character is Doctor Robert (Bob) Johnson, who arrives at Mersey Island with his wife in 1993, on his way to Boston. The reason for his trip is a mystery. Doctor Bob is visiting the town where he served as medical intern over the summer vacation in 1973. The suspense builds as residents recognise Bob, and become emotional, referring to a major incident that occurred many years before. The story turns back to 1973 and Bob's experiences as an intern. One night he is called in by the local Sheriff in response to an anonymous call warning of some young men in trouble in local waters. Bob accompanies the Sheriff only to discover that nearly all of the town's star high school basketball team have perished in a boating accident. The novel explores the horror and grief of young men taken before their time and the unpredictable reactions of the parents. The parents put forward a strange proposal to the local medical team. They want to get portraits taken in uniform, as if the team was still alive! The clinical team somehow achieve this, not without some heart-stopping and emotional scenes. The story also introduces a trio of oyster poachers from Boston who have the opportunity to save some of the boys' lives but fail to do so. It ends badly for the leader of group and he suffers for his failure to assist on the night of the tragedy. The novel ends with two twists, firstly Doctor Bob meets a reincarnation of one of the boys who died twenty years before, and at the conclusion of the book, we learn the purpose of Doctor Bob's reminiscent visit to the town of Mersey Island and his ground-breaking work that was inspired by the tragedy and re-construction of the dead team after their deaths.
