Mental Health in Young Adults from Kashmir

The broad objective of the present study was to examine the status of mental health of young adult Kashmiri students and ascertain its risk and protective factors. In addition, the present study sought to understand the young adults' perceptions about the Kashmir problem and its resolution as well as their views about relationships with social agents, religion and media. The study followed a cross-sectional research design by combining quantitative and qualitative approach. The survey data were collected from 693 college and university students in the age range of 18 to 25 years from all the ten districts of Kashmir Valley. The participants completed Semi-structured Questionnaire, Kashmir Conflict Exposure Checklist, Adverse Childhood Experiences Variables, Mental Health Inventory (MHI-18), Perceived Happiness Scale, Adult Hope Scale, Brief Resilience Scale and Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support. The participation in this study was completely voluntary basis. Frequency, Percentage, Mean, SD and Range were computed for the descriptive analysis. Mann-Whitney U test, Kruskal-Wallis H Test, Spearman's Rank-order Correlation and Hierarchical Regression Analysis were performed for the main analysis. Content analysis was carried out for the analysis of qualitative data.
