Right around the first of May, a fog rolls in over the coast of Maine, completely covering the towns of Key Harbor and Levant Harbor. Abe Jordan has lived through many fogs just like this one; now in his eighties, he is left with little else but the memory of his wife and the anticipation for his own long sleep. Just as the fog rolls in, Morris Levant buys Abe's fishery out from under him, using his nephew Joshua to deliver the news. It is this encounter that brings Abe back to his greatest failure: a missed opportunity to adopt Joshua years ago before Morris could ruin the boy. Now Joshua is a man imploding, and Abe has no intention of standing by quietly this time around. Meanwhile, the fog covers other misdeeds of the town: the ever-dangerous though often-absent Bobby Greenlaw returns to town suddenly; the area's biggest meth dealer heads toward an explosive ending; and a painfully shy teenage girl ties them together in an attempt to outrun her painful past before it can take over her future.
