A romantic novel A New Orleans student, named Chase Hudson, goes to England, to spend his Junior college year abroad. He is a science student. The University of Lancaster, in the mid-1970s provides the background to the story. Student life in the North West of England in winter is described as well as a monthly description of the British academic year. He meets and falls in love with a final year British student, Siobhan O'Keefe (fondly called 'Shiff') studying French. She has a widowed mother who she is close to, being an only child. He has a father, a widower who he is close to. His girlfriend invites him home to spend the Christmas holidays with her mother. When the relationship has deepened, he realizes that he cannot bear to be parted from her for a year, and explores with the help of his personal tutor, the possibility of finishing his degree at Lancaster. It cannot be done. His father writes to him, suggesting that he invites his girlfriend and her mother to New Orleans for a summer holiday, after he himself has returned to New Orleans. Shiff and her Mom accept the invitation. Shiff finishes her French degree, he takes his examinations and leaves to go home.Summer in New Orleans is described. As he and his father prepare for their arrival in New Orleans, he is unaware that tragic events have ensued in England and when he finally learns the truth, it shatters him. In a Prologue, the effect of the death of his father is described. In Chapter 1, he starts to recount his junior college year abroad in England. In an Epilogue, his father has a heart-to-heart discussion with him about his future.The story is told with wit and humor and the end chapters are totally unexpected.
