This work is the result of research carried out during a master's degree programme, the main objective of which was to analyse the written memoirs of primary school teachers, in their role as intellectuals, who, during the First and/or Second Republic, gained public prominence through their activities in the local press, cultural associations and politics. They are the spokespersons for the republicanism that was taking hold from the position of teachers as intellectuals. We analysed newspaper articles, excerpts from poetry, local bibliographies, and various official written records, and we encountered the process of interaction that a group of intellectual teachers established with the republican context, based on the opportunities offered by their status as primary school teachers. We revisited the category of intellectual teacher and took historical memory as a fundamental concept, in its version of documentary historical memory, or simply written memory as a record of common experiences, individual trajectories, or a group at a given historical moment.
