The O'Briens, descendants of Brian Boru, the High King Of Ireland, gather in Doolin in the summer of 1775 for a C ilidh, a reunion of the clans. Under the auspices of song, feasting, and dance competitions, a secret meeting is planned to deal with the uprisings springing up all over Ireland. The new taxes imposed by the English to fund the American Revolution are the last straw. Two hundred years of oppression by the English have stripped the Irish of their lands, freedoms, and means of sustenance. Irish tempers and pride have had enough. Kate O'Brien and her family make the trip across County Clare to join in the fun, yet each has an agenda of their own. One unburdens a pent up rage as another hopes for resolution to conflict. Searching for love, and finding the courage to leave home and find a life of his own, preoccupies two others. Despite their differences, they embody the Irish spirit: hardworking, quick to temper and quicker to laughter. Loyal to country, their faith, and each other, they inspire jealousy in some who would do them harm and destroy all they have worked for.
