A WELL WRITTEN COLLECTION OF STORIES

If you enjoy hunting, in particular duck hunting, then Memories from a Misty Morning Marsh by Larry Dablemont is certainly a book which you will find wonderfully enjoyable. This is a collection of twenty two stories whose central theme is duck hunting. These stories are so much more that just that though. Dablemont is a versatile outdoor writer and his talent in this area shines though with each page. He is also a very knowledgeable naturalist, and it shows. I no longer hunt, and in fact avoid it like the plague. After watching this activity deteriorate into the carnival like goat rope we have during deer and turkey season, to the high tech hunters that spend more on clothing from fancy sporting goods stores, than they do on their vehicles, to the growth of the "canned hunt," I have just lost my stomach for the whole wretched mess. I had a recent conversation with a "gentleman" who made the statement that he did not know why he had purchase the new rifle (for deer hunting) as he had not fired his old one in over six years of hunting. I am not even sure he knew how to load the new one. Keep in mind that around here you can pretty well harvest a deer with a ball or use rocks due to the fact of the size of our herd. Anyway, I bring this up because that is NOT what you get with the work of this author. The stories recorded by this author portray hunting as it should be done, both physically and in spirit. They tell you of the way it use to be, where the only people you encountered in the field were those that had earned their stripes and deserved to be there. As with his other books, articles and publications, this author harkens back to the great old hunting and fishing writers we use to encounter in Field and Stream, Sports Afield and their ilk back in the 1940s, 1950s and early 1960. These are the real thing. Most of this collection consists of duck hunting stories but is much more. We get a wonderful dose of the history of the sport here in the Midwest, conservation points, one or two great biology lessons and some wonderful humor. I personally feel that this author is at this best when writing purely of the natural history of the Ozarks, followed closely by his stories of dogs and old time hunters and fishermen he has known. I love his philosophy of raising and training good gun dogs, as he stresses that these are not just work animals, but intricate members of the family and are treated as such. I hate to bust any bubbles, but it does not "ruin" a dog is the dog is also your pet and companion! This publication is sprinkled with plenty of black and white photos. This is probably the only weakness of the book. The photos are quite good composition wise, but the quality of the printing is not the best I have ever seen. No matter though, it is the words here that count, and this author is certainly one who knows his subject, and has the ability, along with skill to but this thoughts and actions into words and blend them in
