Memoirs of a Comeback Trumpet Player: a practical and evolving approach to the trumpet and jazz

This is a personal account of the trials and tribulations of learning, or rather relearning, to play the trumpet after a 35-year hiatus. The goal was to become reasonably competent to play jazz and swing in multiple settings, including big bands and small combos. This is not a book for those intending or wanting to become professional musicians. It is a book for advanced amateur players who have a limited amount of time and want to use that time to make music, to make reasonably good music. The book is divided into three parts. The first part deals with equipment, including everything from valve oil to mutes and trumpets. The second part deals with the technical aspects of playing, including embouchure development, warm-up routines, and approaches to practicing. The third part deals with jazz, including everything from learning scales and chords to mastering the many elements involved in improvisation. Based solely on the author's experience, this book is not intended to be comprehensive. Rather, it is intended to be inspiring, to motivate people to explore their musical potential in a systematic way. The author can testify to the fact that the rewards are great.
