The unnamed "Madam" is a witness of last resort, standing in for the absent conscience of empire.in dream, reminiscent of Dante's pilgrim-eye, as Walter Benjamin's Theses on History are blown backward into a future memory, a memoir written not after the end but within the ending. It confesses what states cannot admit and what algorithms cannot purge, that the human remembers through pain. If conventional memoir preserves the self, this preserves humanity against replacement.
