Alice Fern Olson Schar was born on the family farm three miles east of Forest City, in Hancock County, Iowa. She lived through the Great Depression and World War II. Although she claimed not to be a storyteller, her reminiscences of those times were always fascinating, often funny and sometimes poignant. After she retired, she began to write down some of the stories she had lived, as well as those she had heard from her parents. This book is the result. It is not a geneology, rather it is a collection of memories - memories of what it was like to grow up on a farm in Iowa in those times. This is a book mostly for her family, but everyone will enjoy the stories it tells of a way of life long gone.
