Memento Mori: a poetry collection about remembering you will die

Remember you will die.

That phrase has stood in Alec John Belle's mind since he was just twelve years old. After spending most of his life wanting to die, he finally came to the conclusion that he needs to learn how to live life to the fullest, never letting a single moment pass with a hint of regret.

But how can he do that when the past keeps catching up to him?

In the sequel to the Memento duology, following Memento Vivere, Alec John Belle has poured his heart out onto paper and wants others to know that life is not meant to be taken for granted. When he wrote these poems, he didn't expect that these poems would feel even more poignant after a psychiatric hospital stay. Now Belle is ready to live his life, knowing that one day, just like everyone else, he will die - but not until it's time. With poems about depression, anxiety, broken hearts, betrayal, lies, death, and more, Alec John Belle also manages to weave in poems about hope, forgiveness, and love and what that looks like in a fallen world.

Memento Mori

They say
to remember you will die,
that one day you'll say goodbye,
and perhaps you might not even get that.

When I think
about what it meant to die,
what it meant back then and now,
I reflect on the things that keep me alive.

I haven't
always wanted to live my life,
and I've struggled with suicidal ideation
since I was the age of ten, praying for death.

The Latin phrase
"remember you will die" has
helped me search for peace and
tranquility that I never could have thought.

While I'm
still working on my past, present,
and what my future on Earth means,
I know I'm meant to be here, alive and breathing.

One day, eventually,
I'll have to say my goodbyes,
to leave this world far, far away,
but right now I'm where I'm meant to be-right here.
