Bullying has plagued school campuses for decades. With the rise of social media, a new form of bullying has developed into an epidemic. Cyberbullying has allowed the torment to follow children home from school and occurs behind closed doors. In order to fight this growing trend, we must take action by educating young children (before they even begin going online) that cyberbullying is wrong and they do not want to take part in it. What we teach them at this tender age will be embedded in their subconscious and will remain with them into their teens and even into adulthood. Instinctually, they will not want to join in with others who are bullying a classmate. They will not want to be a parrot. MeMe the Parrot is a story about a young parrot who recently joined social media. She sees her classmates bullying a friend, Gram, and knows it is wrong. She wants to do something about it! MeMe has courage, and isn't afraid to stand up against the bullies who are picking on her pal. The character MeMe exhibits represents the qualities we hope to see in our own children. By teaching young children now, we can put an end to cyberbullying in their future!
