I disagree with the above review. Elder's book is not at all confusing, unless you're the sort that needs to be spoon-fed information. Along with the book by Jack H. Goins, "Melungeons: And Other Pioneer Families," this is as "good as it gets" in Melungeon research. Elder's genealogical documentation is top-notch, her writing is clear and easy to follow, and she obviously let the data determine her conclusions (not the other way around). It's really too bad the book is out of print. If you can find a copy, and want to know "just the facts" about Melungeons (not the mythology), then you can't go wrong with this book. I've used it so many times for reference, that my own copy has developed a permanent crease down the spine.
