The young Melmoth visits his uncle and protector who is about to die, and there he discovers the painting of an ancestor also called Melmoth. When his uncle dies, the man in the painting appears in the room, and on his deathbed his uncle confesses that the painting is alive. Later, the young Melmoth, through various stories, will learn of the existence of an ancestor who made a pact with the devil and who has lived for more than a hundred years with the same appearance.
