This is one long chase scene with no socially redeeming value.
Lots of useless blood and gore, mostly gratuitous.
In the end, no one grows wiser through experience.
They do not even learn to speak English, just Nahuatl, which is a gimmick.
Fast forward is your friend, and do not worry about missing key information.
Oh, and all that Mayan declining stuff has nothing to do with this movie.
The movie timeframe is known as the Post-Classic Maya period.
Filming locations in case you do not recognize them:
Las Tuxtlas, Veracruz, Mexico
Catemaco, Veracruz, Mexico
Sierra Madre del Sur de Oaxaca, Mexico
Soundtrack available on Hollywood Records – sounds like they borrowed it from “Little Buddha” (1993)

Gibson is overwhelming in detail of what man's lusts are.
