Book Overview

A search for a missing person uncovers a galaxy-spanning conspiracy in this thrilling standalone space opera from award-winning author Megan E. O'Keefe.

The Black Celeste is a ghost story. A once-legendary spaceship collecting dust in a cosmic graveyard known as the Clutch. Only famed pirate Bitter Amandine knows better, and she'll do anything to never go near it again. No matter the cost.

Faven Sythe is crystborn, a member of the near-human species tasked with charting starpaths from station to station. She's trained to be a navigator her entire life. But when her mentor disappears, leaving behind a mysterious starpath terminating in the Clutch, she is determined to find the truth. And only Amandine has the answers.

What they will find is a conspiracy bigger than either of them. Their quest for the truth will uncover secrets Amandine has long fought to keep buried - secrets about how she survived her last encounter in the Clutch, and what's really hidden out there amongst the stars...

Absolutely Fantastic!

I absolutely love the space operas that this author writes! And this book was fabulous! The only sad thing I feel about it, is that it is only a standalone. This universe feels big enough that there could be more books in it, especially when you have the crystborn navigators that can weave starpaths to anywhere. And a mystery like the Black Celeste (always a great sign that there is a haunting or dark place/ship with that name!) with the missing navigators going to the Clutch and never coming back. Just that kept me glued to the story because I wanted to know all about the crystborn what with the tragedy that eventually they turn to crystal after weaving too many paths, and their progenitors who disappeared. You get pirates, Blademothers, traitors, space battles, secrets that people are willing to kill to keep hidden, and of course the relationship between Faven and Amandine as they work together to get to heart of the matter (and the Clutch). This book was perfect and had all the high points of a thriller in space with romance and finding a new way forward, despite the Choir's best efforts to keep everything the same. This author is definitely one of my favorites and I hope she writes many more just as good as this book! And I would love it if we got more Faven and Amandine, especially with their partnership to save the universe with the new truths of humanity and the crystborn that were discovered.
