On February 20, 1824, William Buckland published the first report on a large carnivorous animal: Megalosaurus. The remains included a fragment of the lower jaw, some vertebrae and fragments of the pelvis, a scapula and hind limbs, suggesting that they did not all come from the same individual. The nature of this animal, and the history of its description prompted the development of paleontology and the beginning of the study of dinosaurs.
